A countryside barn conversion in Ansley, Warwickshire, near Nuneaton, designed to retain the character of the original building while creating a modern family home.
AVD was appointed to develop proposals for the conversion of Brook House Barn at Church End, Ansley, into a family home. Due to the poor condition of much of the original structure, the brief included substantial demolition together with new extensions to increase the footprint.
AVD developed the feasibility design and then prepared and managed the Planning and Building Regulations applications through to determination.
The project was located within open countryside, with bats and birds also identified as constraints that needed to be considered. The poor condition of much of the original barn meant the design also had to balance the necessary demolition and rebuilding with the aim of retaining as much of the existing character as possible.
AVD proposed new extensions using materials selected to match the existing barn, while retaining as many original features as the structure allowed.
New oak trusses were introduced as a character feature, together with feature glazing in the locations of the original double barn doors. New vaulted roof forms were also incorporated to create a greater sense of height and space within the converted family home.
Planning Permission was approved, followed by Building Regulations approval. The approved scheme combined the conversion and partial rebuilding of the existing barn with new extensions designed to complement its original character and create a practical family home.
